This trek is perfect for experienced trekkers seeking remote adventure and cultural immersion. You'll experience landscapes unchanged for centuries, interact with Dolpo-pa people who follow ancient Bon and Buddhist traditions, and witness one of Nepal's most spectacular natural wonders - the turquoise Phoksundo Lake with its dramatic 167m waterfall.
Arrival and Transfer: Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Our representative will greet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. After check-in and refreshment, you'll have a brief meeting with your trekking guide who will explain the upcoming trek details. Rest of the day is free to relax, recover from your journey, or explore Thamel area near your hotel. Overnight at 3-star hotel in Kathmandu.

Kathmandu Valley Tour: After breakfast, embark on a guided sightseeing tour of Kathmandu's UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Visit Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) offering panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley, and Patan Durbar Square known for its exquisite Newari architecture. Afternoon is dedicated to trek preparation: finalize packing, rent/buy any necessary equipment, and meet with your guide for detailed briefing about the Dolpo trek. Last opportunity to purchase snacks, batteries, or other personal items for the trek.

Journey to Western Nepal: Early morning transfer to Kathmandu airport for flight to Nepalgunj (approximately 1 hour). Nepalgunj is a bustling border town in western Terai near the Indian border. Notice the dramatic change in climate and landscape from Kathmandu's hills to Terai's tropical plains. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. Rest of the day free to explore Nepalgunj, visit the local market, or rest at hotel. Important: Prepare your daypack for tomorrow's early flight to Juphal as checked baggage will be limited.

Into Dolpo Region: Early morning flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal (45 minutes), a thrilling mountain flight with spectacular Himalayan views. Juphal is the gateway to Dolpo region. Meet your porter team and begin trekking. The trail descends to Thuli Bheri River, then follows the river upstream through terraced fields and pine forests. Pass through Dunai, the administrative headquarters of Dolpo district. Continue along the river valley to Chhepka village. First experience of Dolpo's unique architecture and culture. Overnight at local lodge.

Altitude: 2,475m to 2,838m
To the Turquoise Lake: Trek continues through beautiful pine forests along Phoksundo River. Pass through several small villages with traditional stone houses. Reach Sanduwa/Amchi Hospital area (3,110m) - note the traditional Tibetan medical facility. The trail then climbs more steeply through birch forests to a ridge offering first breathtaking view of Phoksundo Lake and its spectacular 167m waterfall. Descend to Ringmo village (3,733m) beside the stunning turquoise lake. The color of Phoksundo Lake is unforgettable - deep turquoise due to glacial flour in the water. Overnight at lodge by the lake.

Lake Exploration and Cultural Immersion: Full day to explore Phoksundo Lake and Ringmo village. Options include: hike to viewpoints for different perspectives of the lake, visit Bon-po monastery (ancient pre-Buddhist religion still practiced in Dolpo), explore Ringmo village with its traditional stone houses and barley fields, or simply relax by the stunning lake shore. The lake is 5.15kmยฒ in area and 145m deep - Nepal's deepest lake. Learn about local legends and spiritual significance of the lake to Dolpo-pa people. Optional hike to Phoksundo Waterfall viewpoint. Return Journey Begins: After final views of Phoksundo Lake, begin return trek. Climb up from the lake basin to the ridge, then descend through birch and pine forests. Notice changing vegetation as you lose altitude. Arrive back in Chhepka by afternoon. Enjoy the familiar surroundings and reflect on your Phoksundo Lake experience. Overnight at lodge in Chhepka.

Final Trekking Day: Last day of trekking follows the Thuli Bheri River downstream back to Juphal. Pass through Dunai again. The trail is mostly gradual with some ups and downs. Final opportunity to observe daily life in Dolpo villages. Arrive in Juphal by afternoon. Celebrate completion of your trek with your guide and porters. Evening free to relax, wash up, and prepare for tomorrow's flight. Overnight at lodge in Juphal.

Dolpo is one of Nepal's most remote regions. Facilities are basic but adequate. Flights to/from Juphal are weather-dependent and may be delayed. This requires flexibility in travel plans. The trek involves moderate to challenging walking at altitude.

Dolpo is a restricted area requiring special permits ($10 per week). This is INCLUDED in our package. We obtain all necessary permits before your trek. You need to provide passport copies and photos in advance.
Flights to/from Juphal are frequently delayed or cancelled due to weather, especially in monsoon and winter. We include buffer days where possible, but additional accommodation/meal costs due to flight delays are traveler's responsibility (travel insurance should cover this).

Dolpo people practice Tibetan Buddhism mixed with ancient Bon animist traditions. You'll see prayer flags, mani walls, chortens, and monasteries. The region was part of the ancient salt trade route between Tibet and Nepal.
Dolpo-pa live in stone houses, practice subsistence farming (barley, buckwheat), and herd yaks and sheep. Their lifestyle has changed little for centuries. Many still wear traditional Tibetan-style clothing.
